Last night I went to charity gig in aid of Cancer Research UK at The Warehouse, a purpose-built music venue in Grimsby, from the outside, a large white building with a rather fitting name considering its appearance. But its auditorium on the inside, with a stage, dance floor and seating area, makes it a suitable place for events to occur. Three rock bands from Grimsby with different sounds graced the night.
The night began with an enthusiastic introduction from the compere George, for all three bands in fact. Casper’s Ashes were the opening act. On the surface, a raw and grungy sound. To my ears, the vocals and instrumentation were a bit too much like Nirvana for my liking. Their frontman sounded like Kurt Cobain. Bands have their influences, sure, but a grunge band ripping off Nirvana is a bit of a cheap shot to be honest. Lyrically they weren’t as dark but come on, have some originality please.
Blackwell Hollow, a band I’ve seen a few times on the same bill as Reversing Destiny came on next. It’s a bit of a cliché to see a bunch of guys with beards and assume they’re a metal band but let me assure you, you’re not mistaken in this case. Big riffs, gravelly vocals and thrashing drums, plenty of headbang moments. Taking influence from the likes of Slayer, Iron Maiden, Metallica etc. but putting their spin on it was evident in every tune. With covers of Limp Bizkit’s Take A Look Around and Imagine Dragons’ Radioactive in amongst some pumping originals, they made up for the previous act.
Reversing Destiny, an alt rock/metal 5 piece who I’ve had the pleasure of seeing several times, headlined last night. I bet not everyone can say their brother’s in a band, an awesome one to boot. But I can. Featuring Will on vocals, Darryl and Tyler on guitars, Jay on bass and my brother Marcus on drums. Started their set off with Look What The Cat Dragged In, a rap metal stomper, followed by Hero, an alt rock ballad to Dancing With The Devil, a post hardcore track about the dark times in life to One More Day, a track influenced by Alter Bridge. Also played covers of Killing In The Name Of by Rage Against The Machine and Holy Diver by DIO/Killswitch Engage. The fact that they draw inspiration from a wide range of artists and subgenres and combine them with their own ideas and great stage presence make them worth seeing. This like many others was an ace night too.
