A year ago today, I went down to Reading for the last day of their weekend metal fest Facebarmageddon to see The Loved and Lost, Serpentyne and Winter’s Edge at The Facebar. Looks like a rock club from the outside as well as inside, very homely to me as a metalhead.

There were a ton of great bands on that day but I’m gonna focus on the ones that led me there. The Loved and Lost, a band from Worcestershire I had the pleasure of seeing in York, only a few weeks before absolutely owned the stage again. Their riffs, synths and powerful lyrics and vocals I’d grown to love even more since that day made me glad I’d travelled miles to see them again.

Serpentyne, a band I’d seen supporting Winter’s Edge at Vintage Rock Bar Doncaster in April last year kept me glued to the stage once more at the Facebar. A folk rock/metal outfit from London, had a very interesting sound, guitars and bagpipes with a sound that had a medieval feel. Nothing like I’d heard before but probably won’t be the last.

Winter’s Edge, a symphonic metal band from Sussex I’d seen before and enjoyed then couldn’t wait for another chance to see them hence I saw them at the Facebar. The combination of heavy and emotive guitar riffs and powerful lyrics and a very cinematic performance almost like I was watching an opera. Performing songs off their new album at the time, Dying Star plucked at my heart strings, well it wasn’t the only song to, in fact the emotiveness of their music was the one thing that got me into them.
