Metal is one of my favourite genres, the grassroots scene is home to many different flavours just like the mainstream. A year ago today I descended on The Fulford Arms, a live music venue rather well situated in the beautiful walled city of York about half an hours walk from the city centre. It’s rustic homely, country pub feel filled with Yorkshire charm sets the mood. I arrived when the opening band, The Temple finished their set, so I’m going to talk about The Loved and Lost.
From Worcestershire in the West Midlands, The Loved and Lost are a four-piece melodic metal band. This was the first time I’d seen them. I was greeted by their lead singer Jordan, the second I got into the place. Well what can I say, don’t let the raven-haired cute pixie look fool you, Jordan Quinn is one hell of a metal goddess as this night proved. Guitars starting off gentle and going heavy, a few strings samples here and there. Their bassist Jack doing backing vocals and occasionally walking off stage, but all four putting on a great show, playing songs that proved why I like symphonic/melodic metal like Drag Me Down for example.
Sertraline, from Leeds had a symphonic/groove metal flavour. The five piece featured some detuned, heavy riffs, their vocalist Lizzy effortlessly switching from clean vocals to growls like Jinjer’s Tatiana. To quote one of their song titles, their performance set the world alight and the heavy intro of Nyeevise got me hooked. Wasn’t going to leave without buying The Loved and Lost’s Drag Me Down EP and Sertraline’s Guilty and Bury The Ghosts EPs. It was an ace night.
