A year ago today, I enjoyed a night of headbanging at Woolpack Live, one of my favourite nightspots in Doncaster town centre, a venue I had the pleasure of being at a numerous times. Being from the outskirts of Grimsby its great to get out of town and see the grassroots music scene in its glory beyond the confines of my area.
Dychosis opened for The Dead XIII. This was the first time I’d seen them. From Wakefield, the death thrash metal quintet fronted by their resident ginger-haired growler, James started the night off with a bang. An onslaught of dark , heavy riffing with deep growled vocals and doomy melodies. For fans of Cannibal Corpse and Decapitated.
Next up were PIN-UP. A band so different to the first, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you were at a totally different gig. Their sound was brighter, a bit funky in places. A big stoner rock vibe, reminiscent of Queens Of The Stone Age, the first thing most people think of when they hear groovy, stoner rock guitars, bass and drum grooves. Their frontman sounded a bit like QOTSA’s leading dude, Josh Homme.
Finishing off the event, were The Dead XIII, a four piece from Manchester. The industrial metallers looked like something from a horror movie. Bleak, synthy soundscapes wrapped around guitars. Lyrics as gloomy as the underpinning instrumentation. Something that their single around the time of this gig, Dark Days encapsulates. Its title echoing its sound. An awesome rocking night overall. Three bands with totally different sounds, just how I like it.
